Storming Season Opener On Easter Monday
Our 2012 season got off to a superb start on Easter Monday, when a monster entry contested the five formula spectacular at Nuttscorner Oval. With the pits bursting to capacity, the action on track was of high quality indeed, and saw feature race wins for Glenn Bell (National Hot Rods), Gary Wilson (2.0 Hot Rods), Jordan Rochford (Lightning Rods), Ryan Abernethy (ProStocks) and Jack Gilpin (Junior Productions).

In the National Hot Rods, it was Round 11 of the Wash ‘n’ Dash World Series, and returnee Mark Heatrick looked as if he’d never been away by claiming victory in both heats, albeit from the front of the grid. Keith Martin and Adam Maxwell chased him home in heat one, whilst it was Gary Woolsey and Stewart Doak who filled the podium places in the second race of the afternoon. Come final time, it was the weather which scuppered Heatrick’s hat-trick hopes, as a downpour left the track awash and Glenn Bell roared through to win convincingly ahead of Martin and Woolsey.

The 2.0 Hot Rods featured 23 cars, perhaps less than expected, but the action was every bit as frantic as we’d come to expect in recent years. The new tyre ruling was the main talking point however, with everyone coping admirably with their new admin duties! Former Junior Production drivers Bradley Dynes and Lee McCracken annexed the heats from the yellow grade, Dynes heading home Davy Potter and Adam Heatrick in the opener which unfortunately saw Mark Madill’s beautifully refurbished Corsa suffer a major accident after a jammed throttle. McCracken led home Heatrick and Adam Hylands in the second heat which saw major damage to Potter, Derek Martin, Wayne Woolsey and Petie Donnelly. Come final time the heavens had opened, and Heatrick settled into the lead and began a fine defensive drive to hold off the rest. He was equal to everything Hylands and the rest could throw at him, until the slightest mistake allowed seasoned campaigner Gary Wilson through to grab the win. David McMenemy and Martin rounded out the top three after Shane Murray and Hylands were both docked for various infringements.

A monster field of 27 Lightning Rods saw the track packed to capacity, and former National Champion David Hearst used all his experience to work his way through to the heat one win ahead of Michael Lynch and recent form man Richard Stewart. Tim Hazlett looked as though he had the win sewn up in that one only to clash with an errant backmarker, but he made no mistake in heat two as he led Jordan Rochford and Gordy McKee over the line. Rochford then went on to land the feature race final after a stirring drive, with Hazlett good value in second and Hearst third ahead of multi-champion Stephen Emerson.

The ProStocks, new rules and all, also fielded an excellent 27 cars, but it was the old hands who still held sway at the front. Ryan Abernethy produced a superb last lap to take heat one from Alan Haugh, before Lee Booth took heat two ahead of Dan McGreevy and Willie Taggart. The final came down to a late shoot-out between Haugh and Abernethy, and an excellently executed last bend hit saw Ryan grab the win after a fine battle indeed. The drivers of the smaller cars certainly held sway, but when they become outlawed in June those who have made the jump to the bigger models now will surely see the pendulum swing back in their direction.

With recent graduates Rochford, McCracken, Dynes and Hazlett all netting wins in the senior ranks during the day, it shows just how well the Junior Productions teach the young drivers the arts of short oval racing. With a number of others having reached the age limit last year, it was pleasing to still see 12 cars in action, and Edmund Davis steered his newly acquired Corsa to a welcome victory in the first heat of the day, ahead of Bradley McKinstry and Stuart Cochrane. McKinstry went one better to net the chequers in heat two from the impressive Davis and Jack Gilpin, before Gilpin powered through to land the final in an excellent race from Dan Campbell and McKinstry.
