Murray Soars To Jubilee Trophy Success |
 |
Randalstown’s British Champion Shane Murray ran out a very impressive winner of the Jubilee Trophy when the 2.0 Hot Rods made their debut at the new Tullyroan Oval on Saturday night. A huge field of 27 2 Litres, including a class debut for National Hot Rod star Glenn Bell, raced in their eagerly awaited first outing at Tullyroan, and they produced some fantastic high speed action. Even the hardened race fans were astonished at their speed around the oval, and the first heat turned out to be one of those races that had everything. Londonderry driver Darren McGeady set the pace, but was soon chased down by last week’s National Hot Rod final winner Andy Cochrane. Cochrane almost got under McGeady, but only succeeded in triggering a collision which took both out of the running. Philip Beatty accepted the gift of the lead, and went on to take the first ever win for the formula at the venue ahead of Gary Wilson.
Heat two saw another early lead for the yellow grade, as Nigel McCauley got his nose in front in his immaculate Vauxhall Corsa and never looked back. Wilson again chased hard but had to be content with his second runner-up slot of the evening, with meeting sponsor David McMenemy of LMC Trade Sales in third.
With the meeting doubling up as the first round of the Wash ‘n’ Dash Challenge Series, the Jubilee Trophy final was lined up with the tops points scorers from the heats at the front. This saw Wilson and McMenemy sharing the front row, but more notably saw the star drivers nearer the front than their usual back of the grid start. McMenemy grabbed the early initiative and looked for a time as though he would be taking his own trophy home, but that was without factoring in Shane Murray. The British Champion was on a mission right from the off, lapping the track at breakneck speed as he scythed through to second spot. He was soon on the tail of the leader and even McMenemy could offer little resistance such was his surge. Murray cruised home to a very impressive win indeed, with McMenemy holding on for second despite a gallant effort from Birches star Adam Hylands in the closing stages.
Last weeks final victor at the opening meeting, Ben McKee, kept his winning streak alive with victory in both heats in the Lightning Rods on Saturday night. In the first he took a clear win over Tandragee’s David Hearst and British Champion Brendan McConnell. In the second heat Ben led the charge through the lower graders, but this time he had Irish Champion Stephen Emerson hot on his heels. Emerson, who was sensationally disqualified from the first heat for contact, tried all he could but there was no way past McKee who took his second win of the night, and with it a rise back to the star grade for the feature race. Under the floodlights the final was superb stuff, as local Killyman driver Winston Weir took up the running at mid distance before the race was suspended after a very heavy crash for Coleraine driver Mark McLaughlin at the entrance to the home straight. On the restart Weir settled back into the lead, but he now had Emerson, with who he had controversially clashed in heat one, all over him like a rash. Winston stayed calm however, and steered his mount home to the flag and the Jubilee Trophy. Emerson was a very close second, ahead of McConnell and McKee.

With Tullyroan Oval bringing the sport back into the Co Armagh area for the first time in a decade, a number of faces from the Shamrock Park days have been seen back around the raceways for the first time in quite a while. One such man is Derrylee driver Warren Thompson, and he followed up a fine showing on opening night with a controlled heat and final double in the ProStocks. Another large grid of cars took to the track in the budget formula, and Sam McKinstry, the final winner last week, continued where he left off by taking a frenetic opening heat from his brother Adrian and Irish Champion Billy Finnegan. Thompson stamped his authority on the second heat, powering ahead from the front of the grid as those behind him got involved in all sorts of bothers. Adrian McKinstry finally emerged in second once again, ahead of another third spot for Finnegan.
Thompson got the head down in the final right from the off, and built up a decent lead before the field were called to a halt when Andy Emerson’s damaged car blocked the track on the entrance to the back straight. Thompson still held sway at the front, as the McKinstry brothers moved to second and third with the leader firmly in their sights. World Cup champion Tam Agnew was also on the move too, but he got delayed dealing with John Brady and it came down to shoot out between Thompson and Adrian McKinstry. McKinstry dragged himself to within touching distance, but just when it looked like a grandstand finish was on the cards he lost ground at the start of the final lap. Thompson came home to claim his double and the Jubilee Trophy, with the McKinstry’s next over the line ahead of Agnew.
Young Dan Campbell is proving that the new Tullyroan circuit is very much to his liking, and he powered to his second Junior Production final win on the trot on Saturday night. Bradley McKinstry was first across the line in the opening heat, just pipping early season form man Edmund Davis who showed that his recent upgrading will not stop him competing for race wins. Local lad Jack Gilpin, who lives right alongside the new oval, took the honours in heat two ahead of Ethan Dilly and Campbell. Conor Conlon set the early pace in the final, but Campbell soon roared through to take up the running and cruise home to the Jubilee Trophy win. Davis once again impressed in second with Drogheda driver Fionn Donnelly in third.
